Spišské Bystré

A characteristic sub-mountain village south-west of Poprad, in the western part of the Hornád Basin — an elongated tectonic depression between the Low Tatras and the Kozie hills, just above the confluence of the Bystrá and the Hornád. The founding of the settlement of “villa Cubach” is tied to the founding of the monastery in Spišský Štiavnik after 1223; the first written mention appears in a document from 1294 confirming the agreement between Helebrand and Baldo, the count of Spiš, which divided power and income from the settlements founded by German colonists. The name Cubach comes from the German Kuh (cow) and Bach (stream). A church of St Michael is mentioned in 1332. The village was known for producing felted cloth in fulling mills — timber structures with a water wheel — commemorated today by the water wheel in the village centre. The village changed owners until the 20th century and was destroyed by fire several times. The present appearance of the church, also destroyed by fire, dates from the early 20th century. After the Second World War, in 1948, the original name Kubachy was changed to Spišské Bystré after the local stream. In the 1980s the Kubašok ski centre was built on the south-eastern edge of the village, offering very good conditions for beginners and demanding skiers alike.
